St Bakhita Centre

The St. Bakhita Sudanese Community Centre (or St Bakhita Centre) is a community centre located in Flemington, New South Wales, in Sydney, Australia. It was established to provide assistance to Sydney's Sudanese refugee community, particularly in relation to literacy skills. It relies largely on the work of volunteers and works in conjunction with organisations like TAFE. More than 3000 Sudanese Catholics have settled in Sydney and the centre is viewed as a hub of their community by many.
The Centre
The centre has been operational since 2002 and teaches English, computing and craft skills to men, women and children in separate classes. The Centre was established to provide assistance to Sydney's growing Sudanese community, many of whom have arrived in Australia as traumatised refugees from the Second Sudanese Civil War - without literacy and numeracy skills, especially in the case of women. The Centre therefore provides literacy and numeracy courses and child minding services to assist with skills development for life in Australia. Other activities organised by the Centre include welcoming visits to newly arrived refugees, sewing and computer skills.
