Key industries

Key Industries is a nonprofit organization located in Saint John, NB. Key Industries specializes in providing work opportunites, education, volunteer opportunities and social development for adults with disabilities. The work opportunities are in the creation of promotional products such as silkscreening, embroidery, laser engraving, graphic design, packaging & assembly. Key Industries employs approxiamately 50 people and serves 140 clients.
Production
The production department is the "factory" side of Key Industries. The production department consists of eight supervisors and counselors who manage many clients who work in the following sections:
*Embroidery. The embroidery shop uses technologies to decorate fabric with names, numbers and logos.
*Graphic Design. If customers of the production department do not have a logo or design in mind for their promotionals, Key Industries has two professional graphic artists who can create them.
*Laser Engraving. The engraving section uses machines to create grooves in products including trophies, plaques & awards, nameplates for doors & desks, and memoriabilia. Laser engraving can also be hired to add personalized details to expensive or cherished items so that they can be identified and returned if lost.
*Packaging & Assembly. The packaging & assembly clients can be hired to perform a wide variety of tasks including folding & packing envelopes, creating gel packs, collating, inserting, wrapping, counting, and much more.
*Quality Control. The QC group inspects and either approves or rejects each promotional product that is created in the production department.
*Silkscreening. The silkscreen shop works to imprint t-shirts, sweaters and other apparel with logos, jsersey numbers, etc.
Programming
The programming department consists of a variety of courses, groups and facilitators offering many types of development to Key Industries' clients. The department employees 1 director, 7 counselors, 2 educators, 5 program facilitators, 5 maintenance workers, and several one-on-one human service counselors.
*Food Service. The Food Service group, under the direction of one counselor, works to provide meals to employees & clients at lunch & breaks in Key Industries' dining hall.
*Daily Valued Activities. Daily Valued Activities, the programming departments largest service, consists of small groups of clients that normally do not partake in production of promotional products. These clients engage in activities such as art, creative writing, volunteering, reading comprehension, etc. Also, the canteen is run by DVA clients.
*Education. The Education section consists of one teacher and 3 clients who work as tutors in reading, numeracy and computer usage. The education department also has a small library with fiction & non-fiction books,a s well as movies, for clients & employees to sign out.
*Elite Support Services. Elite is a contract program providing human service counselors to clients requiring one-on-one support.
*Life Skills. Key Industries has a wide range of optional Life Skills courses including intimate behaviours, budgeting, home cooking, relationships, job interviews and much more.
*Maintenance. Key Industries hires clients to provide maintenance support and custodial services to the building.
*Music. The Music Facilitator provides one-on-one or group music therapy. Also, Key Industries' "In-Key Choir" is part of the music facilitator's job. The choir practises twice per week and performs publicly once per month.
*Physical Fitness. Key Industries has recently begun an optional fitness program available to all its clients. Also, employees & clients are permitted to use fitness equipment on breaks.
* Workplace Essential Skills(W.E.S.). This is a new program to Key Industries, supported and financed by the Government of New Brunswick where clients are chosen, normally those who wish to work outside Key Industries. The subjects taught in this program are reading, writing, numeracy, thinking skills, computer use, document use, oral communication, working with others and continuous learning.
Sales & Administration
The employees of the sales & administration departments serve the logistical functions of Key Industries. They also work to market Key Industries to businesses and organizations that may want to benefit from the promotional products. The sales personnel are the primary contact for businesses and organizations who wish to order products and services. The department employees 1 president, 3 accountants, 1 receptionist, 2 business development officers, and 3 salespeople and 1 operations manager.
*Accounting, Purchasing & Customer Pickup
*Key Industries Charitable Foundation. This foundation looks after the dispersement of funds to charitable organizations in New Brunswick and Canada as a whole.
*Operations. This department is in charge of facilities and infrastructure management.
*Reception. This section is responsible for greeting customers and clients in person and operating the telephone system.
*Sales & Business Development. This unit is responsible for taking orders from customers and managing customer accounts, as well as marketing Key Industries' products.
