Spyros Sofos

Spyros Sofos, born in Athens, Greece, is a social scientist known for his work on societal insecurity, conflict and identity and his contribution to the study of Southeastern European politics. He has also written on multiculturalism, islamophobia and on Islam and Muslims in Europe.
Education
Spyros Sofos studied Political Science and International Studies at Panteion University in Athens and, in 1986, having obtained a NATO Research Fellowship, studied Sociology and Social Anthropology at the University of Kent at Canterbury.
Career
In 1994 he joined Portsmouth University as a Research Associate and later Research Fellow and Senior Lecturer in Politics and was a founding member and member of the Management Group of Portsmouth's Centre for European Studies Research (currently Centre for European and International Studies Research (CEISR)).
In 2000 he was appointed as a Senior Research Fellow in International Politics at Kingston University, London, where he worked for the establishment of the University's pathbreaking MSc in International Conflict which he directed until 2006. He has also been visiting professor at Tartu University (Multiculturalism), the University of Siena (Human Rights and Humanitarian Action) and Istanbul Bilgi University (Turkish-Greek Studies).
He is currently faculty member at the Center for Middle Eastern Studies (CMES) of Lund University in Sweden and a member of a research team comparing the Turkish and Nordic Experiences as potential models for transition societies
He has served as a member of the editorial boards of Journal of Contemporary European Studies, Mediterranean Politics and Journal of Southern Europe and the Balkans. He has served as chairperson of the Association for the Study of South Europe and the Balkans.
Together with Umut Özkırımlı, he is editing the Islam and Nationalism book series published by Palgrave Macmillan.
He has been active in the theory and practice of conflict transformation in Southeastern Europe and beyond and is serving in the advisory board of Transconflict, a conflict transformation NGO and Cool Culture, a not-for-profit organization working to raise public awareness of the value of cultural diversity and co-existence.
