Joseph Denney (born March 28, 1990 in Watertown, New York), who performs as Spirit Spine, is an American musician. Denney began continually making music after being inspired to create "little EPs with little stories." He released his self-titled debut LP in 2009 and since has gained notable media attention, including from The Tripwire and Indie Rock Cafe . Recent Work Spirit Spine recently appeared on the Live From Bloomington CD aimed to benefit a local charity April 2009 and is reportedly working on a second EP to be released digitally and given away for free in early June . Biography Denney started creating music at a young age in Greenwood, Indiana while attending Center Grove High School. He produces music that often includes samples from other musicians creating somewhat of a mashup-based style while still retaining ambient music and electronic music influences. Although he has been compared to Animal Collective and Panda Bear , Denney's style is described as much more transfixing with a solid beat and low toned vocals resembling Ian Curtis of Joy Division . All of Denney's music is recorded using Garageband. The stage name "Spirit Spine" has been said to have multiple origins ranging from a random band name generator to the name of a new age healing facility . While under the name "Crimson Citizen", Denney focused more on guitar based music while "Lumigra" was more synth and drum machine based. Denney is currently a student at Indiana University in the Communications program and minoring in Ethnomusicology.
