Solaufein is a minor non-player character found in the computer game Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn, the second installment of the Baldur's Gate series. He is a drow living in Ust'Natha, a city in the Underdark of the Forgotten Realms campaign setting.
Solaufein is a male drow assigned to assist the player character in their tasks in Ust'Natha. The sardonic and sour Solaufein clearly doesn't like the player character, and almost constantly insults the player character when the player character talk to him. However, he turns out to be one of the rare worshippers of the good drow goddess Eilistraee, which is in opposition to the evil Lolth-worshipping ruling class of Ust'Natha. At the end of the Underdark chapter, he helps the player character stop a Drow plot that will give the drow assistance from a powerful demon in their war against the surface elves. He seems to be inspired by another drow elf, Zaknafein, from The Dark Elf book series. Their names resemble each others, and both are good-aligned drow fighter males. Also, they have quite resembling positions, Zaknafein being the weapons master of a drow house, and Solaufein having a quite similar position.
Modification A popular modification of the game is designed to expand the character's role and make him available as a member of the non-player character adventuring party. Due to dissatisfaction with the romantic choices in the game (for female protagonists there was only one romantic choice in Anomen, whereas male protagonists had a choice of three), Westley Weimer created a mod that added Solaufein as an NPC available as a member of the adventuring party. Solaufein was also made available as a romantic interest for both male and female player characters; there are normally no potential same-sex relationships in an unmodded game.
