Sol 0 is a 2016 video game released for Windows, Mac and Linux by the independent one-man studio Chondrite Games. The game revolves around establishing a human colony on Mars. Development began in 2014, and it was officially released on 15 January 2016. Gameplay is in the form of real-time strategy, with a focus on resource management, ensuring that there are both sufficient resources to support the colonists, and sufficient colonists to maintain the infrastructure. Although there are no traditional enemies, environmental effects such as solar storms, meteor strikes, dust devils and sand storms can hinder the player's progress, destroying structures and killing colonists. The end-game involves building a terraforming plant and declaring independence from Earth. The technology depicted in Sol 0 is generally currently available or in development, with the aim of creating a realistic experience of the first few years of a Martian colony. Some advanced technologies, notably terraforming, are more in the realms of science-fiction. Sol 0 includes several maps, each of which can support a separate colony, and a map editor which allows players to create and share their own maps.
