Smart Chef

Smart Chef is a brand of applications for the iPhone and iPod Touch developed by Rantek Inc. To date, three applications exist under the Smart Chef umbrella: Smart Chef Substitutions, Smart Chef Conversions, and Smart Chef Definitions. The first of the three, Smart Chef Substitutions, appeared in the App Store Staff Favorites section in October, 2009. Since then Smart Chef has remained in the top 100 paid applications in the Lifestyle category.
Smart Chef Substitutions
The application features a collection of over 300 food substitutes designed to assist a cook that has run out of certain ingredients. Categories include, Cooking, Baking, Dairy, Herbs, Vegetables, Spices, Alcohol, Dessert, and Miscellaneous. The app can also be used to assist individuals in need of adjusting a recipe to avoid certain ingredients such as dairy products.
Apps du jour Ad Campaign
Starting in January 2010 Apple Inc. began an ad campaign called "Apps du jour" to market the iPhone to a new audience including fine dining enthusiasts. The ad featured Smart Chef Substitutions as one of five applications available in the App Store in order to communicate the wide range of uses for the iPhone. To date Smart Chef has appeared in this advertisement on the back covers of Food & Wine, bon appetit, Saveur, and Cooking Light magazines. As of March 2010 this advertisement has appeared in over 2.6 million magazines.
Smart Chef Conversions
Smart Chef Conversions was released October 14, 2009 and allows the user to convert U.S. and U.K. measurements commonly used in cooking. The application also provides temperature and weight conversions.
Smart Chef Definitions
Smart Chef Definitions was released December 30, 2009 and gives the user access to a dictionary of cooking terms of English, French, Italian and Japanese backgrounds.
