The Serial Diners of Toronto was created by Jason Taniguchi on November 24, 1989. The group is dedicated to visiting every restaurant listed in the Toronto Yellow Pages telephone directory, in alphabetical order. Every Friday evening, the group dines at a new restaurant, according to a pre-determined schedule. Membership is free and informal. Since the Serial Diners was founded, more than 700 people have dined with the group, including composer and singer Dan Bryk. It has been featured in several local and national newspapers, such as the Toronto Star, the Globe and Mail, and the National Post, and also on television (TV Ontario). Taniguchi also created a Serial Diners chapter in Vancouver. Similar groups have been founded in cities in the USA, Sweden and China. Every year, the Serial Diners vote upon and confer a series of awards on restaurants that the group has visited in the last 12 months.
