Institute for Effective Education

The Institute for Effective Education (IEE) is a research and dissemination centre, launched in 2007 at the University of York. IEE staff conduct rigorous evaluations of education programmes and practice in the UK and overseas, mainly focused on literacy, numeracy, and science, but also including early childhood education, parenting, widening participation, and the effective use of technology. The IEE works closely with schools, policy makers, and other researchers to share research knowledge and build support for evidence-based education in policy and practice.
IEE staff helped to found the Coalition for Evidence-based Education (CEBE), a UK alliance of researchers, policy makers, and practitioners who are interested in improving the way research evidence is accessed, and used, across the education sector. With the university’s Postwar Reconstruction and Development Unit, it has also launched Education in Conflict and Emergencies, an interdisciplinary programme that aims to develop academic thinking and build best practice for the role of education in transforming conflict and mitigating humanitarian emergencies.
The founding director of the IEE was Professor Robert Slavin, and it is now led by Professor Bette Chambers. The IEE’s executive group is led by former Education Secretary Estelle Morris.
