Mission 1. To be an independent student-based organisation that encourages the exploration and development of space. 2. To enable students discuss, learn about and implement space and space-enabled technologies. 3. To create future leaders who can aid the exploration and development of space. 4. To encourage members to understand the importance of space exploration and development. 5. To encourage members to build models/prototypes to better understand the working of space systems(rockets, satellites, space crafts, probes, rovers, orbiters etc). 6. To encourage members to explore space through ground and space based tools and instruments (telescopes, softwares, binoculars etc). 7. To encourage innovations in space sciences through paper presentations and research and development.. 8. To encourage members to popularize space sciences in the country among students in particular and the public in general. 9. To encourage the development of lateral space related fields like space art, space music, space literature, space law etc. to augment the capabilities that space science enables. 10.To enable students to work in teams and share their knowledge as a means of personal growth and development. What is SEDS? SEDS is an independent, non-profit, student-based organization which promotes the exploration and development of space. SEDS pursues this mission by educating people about the benefits of space, by supporting a network of interested students, by providing an opportunity for members to develop their leadership skills, and inspiring people through our involvement in space-related projects. SEDS believes in a space-faring civilization and that focusing the enthusiasm of young people is the key to our future in space. One of its major objectives is to generate interest and help people in pursuing space oriented careers. The prime initiative is to generate and stimulate Interest amongst its members in space sciences and promotion of hobbies of astronomy, astrophysics, star gazing has taken a good stand.SEDS nurtures its members' innovativeness and makes them aware with the latest in space technology.SEDS thrives to provide avenues for career opportunities and to reveal opportunities for young engineers and students hailing from various fields. It highlights career prospects & gives more insight in the fields of astronomy, astrophysics and aerospace. SEDS delivers value to its members through constant encouragement and helps its student members in their projects related to space sciences; assisting them in their endeavors. The organizational structure of SEDS comprising entirely of students provides an opportunity to the members to hone their Communications skills, Leadership skills and management skills. ==Space Exploration and India!== India is ramping up her space capabilities in an effort to be seen as a major global space power. She is moving beyond her traditional missions of developing communications and remote sensing satellites to focus on new areas, like navigation. She is also working on her first mission to the Moon and has indicated her interest in undertaking manned missions in the future. India’s space program is branching out into new fields, including deep space exploration and space science. Its R&D facilities have been pioneers in development of indigenous capabilities in almost every sphere of satellite and launch vehicle development. Apart from being accredited with being the curators of vast amounts of astronomical know-how from pre-historic times, India has always understood the importance of Space Exploration and its incomprehensible benefits for mankind. As she sees the dawn of a new era of a developed and dynamic nation, India is ready to spread its wings far and wide and conquer this final frontier called SPACE! How are SEDS Members different from others SEDS members are people interested in doing as much as they can to promote space exploration and development. The first step in this continual process is learning. SEDS provides an excellent environment in which to obtain access to many sources of information including speakers, tours, films, discussion groups & daily updates. Astronomical observing trips and tours of local space facilities also play a significant role in the life of many SEDS members. SEDS members often take the knowledge they have gained and use it to influence the future of the space program. Students at several chapters have played major roles in organizing large conferences and have established important contacts with members of the space community. Others have helped increase public awareness of the benefits of space exploration by offering presentations to local primary and secondary schools as well as universities. All chapters keep in contact with each other through on-line computer networks. SEDS can provide an organized pathway for you to begin space related projects and give you a chance to break away from just the usual class-work. You can also use SEDS as a stepping stone to a space-related career. Being actively involved in SEDS can put you in touch with many members of the space, technology, and education community and will allow you to develop the experience necessary to take leadership roles in your future career, whatever that may be. History About SEDS India SEDS in India was started in 2004 by Mr. Pradeep Mohandas, an undergrad engineering student and an all time space lover and by Mr. Abhishek Ray. The first chapter sprang up in Mumbai at PIIT, New Panvel and had 5 members, a humble beginning for this now vibrant community of amateur Space Explorers, hobbyists and enthusiasts. About SEDS India SEDS-India is the governing body of SEDS in India with its headquarters at VIT University. The governing body was set up in 2005 to co-ordinate the activities, projects, events and outreach of all the affiliated member chapters of SEDS India. The Executive council of SEDS India consists of six Board Members who are selected through a rigorous voting process, all the individual members of SEDS India are eligible to Vote to select their Committee. The Committee serves for a period of one year and works towards expansion of the Chapter Base in India. SEDS India has successfully conducted four Conferences in the past and shall in the coming years regularize the concept of SEDS India National Conference or the SEDS International Conference, held across 2007-2012. SEDS India has funding secured for six projects which are carried out by its Chapter Members. There have been active collaboration with various organizations in the Space Industry that guide SEDS India in the right direction. The Permanent Trustee of SEDS India is Dr. Geetha Manivasagam, Professor, VIT University. The advisory panel has various accomplished dignitaries on its board, including the Associate Director of Vikram Sarabhai Space Center. About SEDS in North-East India Though SEDS is a very famous Student society served world-wide, still its vision are yet to spread in Northeastern India due lack of modern views about space science among the present teenage population. Still there has been initiatives by SEDS-India to establish its chapters in the northeast. In tis initiative with the help of Angaraj Duara, alumini of Maharishi Vidyamandir Shilpukhuri, Guwahati, SEDS INDIA established seven chapters in Assam (between August and September 2013) in - Army Public School Narangi, Sharla Birla Gyan Jyoti School Guwahati, IIT-Guwahati,Handique Girls College, Royal Global Institute - RSET Guwahati, Donbosco Public School Panbazar and at last Tezpur University. SEDS-APSN was the first chapter among SEDS chapters in the northeast of India. Later it was decided to constitute a SEDS-NorthEast Chapter to govern SEDS activities in the northeast but not yet finalised till 31 January 2014. About SEDS-APSN Chapter of SEDS-India SEDS-APSN is a unique Chapter of SEDS - INDIA as being the first chapter of SEDS-INDIA in the whole of Northeast. SEDS - APSN was setup on 20 August 2013 on initiative by SEDS-India and contribution of Angaraj Duara and support of Mrs. Prabha Dastidar, Principal of Army Public School Narangi, Guwahati to promote the interest of students in Space Science with full contribution by Miss Monmi Goswami(PGT Chemistry) and Bishal Baishya(then Head of Projects). ==Model Making Competion on Topic - "Hubble Space Telescope Prototype"== In response to notice on 02 October 2013 by SEDS-RSET (a chapter under SEDS-India) of Royal School of Engineering and Technology,Betkuchi (Guwahati), SEDS-APSN chapter took part in Model Making Competion on the Topic- "Hubble Space Telescope Prototype" held on 01 November 2013 and secured 2nd Position in the competion. Being the first event of SEDS in the North-East it was a great sucess. Moreover it was a great experience for members and participants of SEDS-APSN Chapter. Here the participating chapter had to present a model of Hubble Space Telescope and an idea for improvement of the Satellite to belittle its drawbacks.
