University of Maine Circle K is a service organization at the University of Maine in Orono where students volunteer their time and efforts towards creating a better community. Stuents develope leadership skills, network with other circle k members throughout the New England District, and contribute to the bettering of their community. It is also home of the Annual St. Baldrick's on Maine Day Head Shaving event. 1 History: The University of Mmaine Circle K club was officially chartered on the University of Maine Campus on May 10, 1983. The Sponsoring Kiwanis club is the Orono-Old Town Kiwanis club. Since being Chartered the club has been very active having 5 District Governors being from the club including 1988-1989 Donna Roach, 1989-1990 Steve Elder, 1990-1991 Shari Repoze,1993-1994 heidi Turner, and Sara Van Keurun in 1994-1995. 2 Circle K International: UMaine Circle K is part of an International organization with clubs on more than 550 campuses. It is the premier service organization on college campuses and on of the Student Leadership Programs sponsored by Kiwanis International. The three tenents of Circle KInternational are Service, Leadership, Fellowship. The motto "Live to Serve, Love to Serve". 3 Kiwanis Family: Circle K International is a Part of the Kiwanis Family which includes Kiwanis International and other Student Leadership Programs. The club below Circle K is Key Club. Key Club International is the oldest and largest service program for high school students worldwide. This student-led organization teaches leadership through service to others. Every day, Key Club members carry out the motto “Caring: Our Way of Life.” The club below Key Club is Builder's Club. Nearly 40, 000 middle and junior high students in 1,300 clubs in 18 nations contribute service to school and community while developing leadership and people skills. Builders Club members implement practical service-learning principals as they focus on supporting organizations that focus on the needs of children. The club below Builder's Club is Kiwanis Kids. K-Kids is a student-led community service club for elementary students that teaches members the value of helping others through participation in community service projects and club activities. This is not the only program for elementary schoolers. There is also Bring Up Grades which encourages elementary students to improve their grades to get an award, and encourages them to maintain or continue to raise them from one grading period to the next. There is also a program called Terrific Kids. Terrific Kids is a student recognition program that promotes character development, self-esteem, and perseverance. Students work with their classroom teacher and establish goals to improve behavior, relationships, attendance, or schoolwork. There is also Aktions Club, which is a volunteer oriented service group for adults with disabilities.. Aktion Club members strive to return to their communities the benefits, help, and caring they have received, as well as develop important skills in the process. 4 UMaine Circle K: is of the most active clubs on the University of Maine Campus. Meetings take place on a day and time designated at the beginning of the semester usually taking place in one of the rooms in the Memorial Union. The Circle K service year does not follow the school year and begins on April 1 which is when the new officers begin their term in officer St. Baldrick's on Maine Day is the biggest event the club puts on, Stated in 2011 by former CKI member India Stewart, the event is where students, professors, and community members shave their heads in solidarity with children who have cancer. "Shavees" raise money through pledges which goes towards the St. Baldrick's Foundation.
