Sean Spiller (b. 1975) is a New Jersey politician, union leader and teacher from Montclair, New Jersey running in the Democratic primary for Governor in the 2025 election. Early life and education Spiller was born in Jamaica to Tom and Hyacinth Spiller. Along with his brother the family moved around the world until eventually staying in Montville, New Jersey. He graduated from Montville High School in 1993 and went on to Rutgers University where he played club hockey and later returned to graduate with a BA. He taught at Kinnelon High School shortly after graduating, later graduated from Ramapo College with a MS degree and spent his last years of teaching at Wayne Valley High School, where he was named president of the Wayne Education Association in 2007. He left to become a full time member of state teachers' union NJEA leadership in 2013. Political career Spiller ran for and won election to Montclair's third ward by a margin of 133 votes in 2012; he was subsequently elected NJEA Secretary/Treasurer in 2013, which eventually led to a lawsuit due to potential conflict of interest. He had been appointed as a member of the Montclair Board of School Estimate at the same time as being part of NJEA leadership, and was required by the judge to step down from the Montclair Board in 2016. Despite the controversy, he was re-elected by a nearly fifty percent margin that year; he was then elected vice president in 2017. His election as president of the NJEA followed in 2021.
