Derwin Lamar Montgomery

Derwin Lamar Montgomery (born September 3, 1988) is a member of the Winston-Salem, N.C. City Council representing the East Ward, and is the Youth Pastor at First Calvary Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, N.C. On September 15, 2009 Derwin won the democratic nomination for the Winston-Salem City Council representing the East Ward. He defeated sixteen year incumbent Joycelyn Johnson, and went unopposed in the general election. His victory in November 2009 made him the youngest member elected to the Winston-Salem, N.C. City Council in recorded history and at the time the youngest elected official in the state of North Carolina.
Derwin was born in Columbia, South Carolina and was reared in Hopkins, South Carolina. He attended public schools. He is a graduate of Lower Richland High School in Hopkins, South Carolina. While there Derwin was his Class President from his Freshmen to junior year. His senior year he served as the President of the newly created Principals Advisory Board.
On May 8, 2010 Derwin graduated from Winston-Salem State University with a degree in Political Science with a concentration in Public Administration. Currently Derwin works for Winston-Salem State University part time and is enrolled full time at Wake Forest University in the School of Divinity.
