Sally-Jean Shackleton

Sally-Jean Shackleton is the director of Sweat (Sex Workers’ Education and Advocacy Taskteam, Cape Town) and works with Women'sNet, the first feminist e-technology hub in South Africa, an organization that works to advance gender equality and justice through the use of Information and Communication Technologies.
Shackleton started her career in the gender sector in 1991, working as a volunteer counsellor for People Opposing Women Abuse (Powa). She was employed as Powa's information and media officer in 1994 and joined Women'sNet in 2001. Centered around sexual health, sex work, prostitution, trafficking and women's human rights Shackleton's work betters information technologies and networks. She has helped women's organizations use the internet more strategically, facilitating discussion lists, developing content and designing websites. She has established a 24-hour helpline service and a "please-call-me service" which lets prostitutes communicate for free if they own a cell-phone, often used to report violence.
