S. R. Chishti

S. R. Chishti (born June 5, 1965) is a famous tabla player of and the music composer. He has played tabla with a number of leading musicians of India. Currently he is music(tabla) instructor at Cultural Education Center, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh. S. R. Chishti authored the first ever book on the art of playing Tabla in Urdu language named Fun-e-Tabla after 1906. Currently he is working on his forthcoming book Compositions of The Tabla Maestros in English language with his disciple Muhammad Sarim Ashrafi.
Early life and education
Chishti was born in a well-known Muslim musical family of Faizabad, Uttar Pradesh. He earned his primary education of music from his father Mr. W. R. Chishti(Violinist) and later he was trained the music under the guidance of late Banshilal. Later on he became the disciple of a famous Tabla player Acharya Gireesh Chandra Shriwastawa in Allahabad and he accomplished his training from renowned artist Khalifa Ustad Aafaq Husain Khan, a very well known tabla player of .
He earned Sangeet Praveen (Tabla) in 1986, Sangeet Prabhakar (Vocal) from Prayag Sangeet Samiti, Allahabad in 1987 and Sangeet Bhaskar (Tabla) from Prachin Kala Kendra, Chandigarh in 2002. He completed his Ph.D. (Tabla) from Dr. B.R. Ambedkar University, Agra.
