Recycle Rama

Recycling is reusing materials such as glass, metal, paper, etc. (O’Conner) Recycling is beneficial to the community in a variety of ways. The mid-Michigan community created a recycling event and called it Recycle Rama (Farrington). The Recycle Rama committee included: Lansing Board of Water & Light, City of East Lansing, City of Lansing, Delhi Township, Ingham County Health Department, Michigan Energy Options, and Michigan State University (“Recycle Rama Flyer”). The even brings awareness of recycling to the public. Flyers and handouts were posted within the Mid-Michigan area. It takes place at the Ingham County Health Department bi-annually; once in the spring and once in the fall (“Recycle Rama Flyer”). Recycle Rama’s first event was held in September of 2010, the second event in April 2011, and the third in September 2011 (Farrington).
Volunteers
Recycle Rama has 250 volunteers show up for the event each year (Lavey). The volunteers are given a free t-shirt. Volunteers have the choice of working two shifts. Each volunteer is stations in areas such as the electronics station, books station, etc.
The Event
Recycle Rama collect household appliances, electronics (cellphones, televisions, radios, etc.), air conditioners, dehumidifiers, scrap metals, clothing, oil, books, bicycles, eyeglasses, old prescription medicines, thermostats, and light bulbs (“Recycle Rama Flyer”). About 2,000 vehicles drive to the Ingham Health Department (Knorek). The vehicles follow a map of the event, which is located outside of the building. On the north side of the parking lot (front of the building) is four entrances for the residents. Volunteers direct traffic to prevent any accidents. The south side of the parking lot (back of the building) is where the recyclable items are distributed. Volunteers are there to help unload certain items from the vehicles (Farrington).

Benefits
The Recycle Rama event greatly benefits the community (Lavey). People want to acknowledge and expose their eco-friendly ways. Recycle Rama collects monetary donations from the Mid-Michigan community during the event. The Recycle Rama committee fundraises to make this event effective (“Recycle Rama Flyer”). Without recycling, the community would have drawbacks such as overcapacity waste consumption.
