Rebecca Coad is the candidate for the New Democratic Party (NDP) in the Vancouver Quadra riding in the March 17, 2008 by-election.
Born in Richmond, British Columbia and raised in Vernon, British Columbia, she has resided in Vancouver Quadra since 2001. She is currently studying philosophy and political science at the University of British Columbia after graduating from the Douglas College Theatre Program. On March 11, 2007, Rebecca was nominated by the Vancouver Quadra NDP to be their candidate in the upcoming election.
Before winning the nomination to represent Vancouver Quadra, Coad's interest in social justice issues had developed through her volunteer commitments both locally and internationally. She has acted as organizer/fundraiser for several organizations, including the University of British Columbia's Oxfam Canada chapter, the Stephen Lewis Foundation, and AIDS Vancouver. After spending time teaching English abroad, she expanded her experience in, and commitment to, education by working with residents of the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver at the Carnegie Community Centre, both in the kitchen and as a discussion facilitator for This program provides a year long liberal arts and social science education regardless of financial and social barriers for residents of the Downtown Eastside who do not typically have access to post-secondary education. Coad is also active with the UBC NDP.
