Raymond J. Noonan

Raymond J. Noonan is a scholar of human sexuality and co-editor of the 2004 edition of International Encyclopedia of Sexuality.
Career
Noonan received his PhD from New York University in 1998. His doctoral thesis was entitled "A philosophical inquiry into the role of sexology in space life sciences research and human factors considerations for extended spaceflight.".
He is the co-editor of the Continuum Complete International Encyclopedia of Sexuality and the director of the website SexQuest.com which provides educational consulting and content on human sexuality. As of 2013 he is an adjunct professor in the Health and Physical Education Department at the Fashion Institute of Technology of the State University of New York, and is the former chairperson of the department.
Research and publications
Noonan takes a "complex systems approach" to the study of sexuality and has specialized in the areas of sex in outer space, the use of surrogates in sex therapy, sex and the future of the Internet, and the issue of sex negativity in U.S. culture.
Noonan has contributed several articles to the International Encyclopedia of Sexuality since its first publication. His further contributions to the latest edition of the encyclopedia include "Editors' conclusion, Global Trends: Some Final Impressions" (co-authored with Robert T. Francoeur) and sections in the "Brazil" and "Australia" chapters.

In addition to his work for the International Encyclopedia of Sexuality, his other publications include "The Psychology of Sex: A Mirror from the Internet" in Jayne Gackenbach's book, Psychology and the Internet: Intrapersonal, Interpersonal, and Transpersonal Implications and the chapters "New Directions, New Hope for Sexuality: On the Cutting Edge of Sane Sex" and "Survival Strategies for Lovers in the 1990s" in Does Anyone Still Remember When Sex Was Fun? Positive Sexuality in the Age of AIDS which he also co-edited.
