Rashid Ferrod Davis

Rashid Ferrod Davis is a 1992 graduate of Morehouse College and is a successful turnaround principal. Rashid is a transformational leader with more than 15 years of experience in public education. Upon completing a Master of Arts in English Education, Teachers College, Columbia University, Rashid joined the New York City Board of Education as an English teacher at John F. Kennedy High School, District 10, in the Bronx. In 2003,Rashid graduated from Fordham University's School of Education, Lincoln Center Campus, New York with a Masters in Administration, (the Visionary, Instructional, and Administrative Leadership (VIA) Program an educational leadership preparation program). The purpose of the partnership between the Bronx High School District and Fordham University was to increase the pool of candidates for school leadership vacancies in the Bronx High School District. The District funded 25% of the students' tuition and the University provided a 25% tuition reduction. Students moved through the program as a cohort and were required to work cooperatively with team members from their schools on school improvement projects in order to develop a collaborative leadership style. The program increased the pool of candidates who were female and/or from minority backgrounds for vacancies in school administration positions in the Bronx High Schools. Many of the students were able to obtain school leadership positions. During the school year 2010-2011, Rashid mentored 6 teachers who graduated from School Building Leadership programs at Fordham University and Baruch College in New York City. Rashid also earned a Masters of Science in Publishing, Pace University, 1993.
February 2011, Rashid became the founding Principal of Pathways in Technology Early College High School(P-TECH). Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH) is a New York City public high school that is set to open in September 2011.It was developed through a unique partnership between the IBM corporation, City University of New York - City Tech, and the New York City Department of Education. The school focuses on postsecondary pathways in the area of Information Technology, helping a diverse group of students enter into this highly competitive field. The grades 9-14 will be a unique hollege (high school and two years of college).
In August 2006 Rashid became the third Principal of Bronx Engineering and Technology Academy (BETA).In July 2008, Rashid appeared on Good Morning America with Sam Champion and two graduates of BETA as representatives of successful small schools. In November 2008, Diane Sawyer and Melinda Gates visited BETA and taped an interview that would appear on Good Morning America in January 2009. In March 2009, Rashid had an on air interview for the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) with the United Kingdom's Secretary of Education, Ed Balls. In May 2009, BETA was recognized as a High Performing Gap Closing School in New York State. In June 2009, BETA was ranked #143 on Newsweek's 1500 Top American High Schools. In December 2009, BETA
was recognized on US News and World Reports America's Best High Schools with Silver Medal Recognition. In June 2010, BETA appeared on Newsweek's 1500 Top American High Schools a 2nd year consecutively, ranked #233. In May 2011, Jay Mathew's via the Washington Post published the High School Challenge Index and BETA ranked #153. The Challenge Index list uses only one factor — the ratio of college level tests to graduating seniors — to rank schools. BETA has a three year average graduation rate average of 84% and BETA has a more than 80% male(Hispanic and Black) population.
