RaidMyRoom

RaidMyRoom is a free access social networking website that is operated and privately owned by Raidmyroom, LLC.
Michael Scott founded RaidMyRoom, along with Johnlouis Petitbon and Mauro Catenacci, partners in Radical Fringe, a creative technology studio.
The website is welcome to anyone age 13 and older; however, it is primarily targeted to users ages 13 to 26.
The idea for RaidMyRoom came about because the founders of RaidMyRoom were bored with the existing architecture of social network sites. They were tired of their creativity being stifled by templates and endless scrolling, and wanted a more expressive on-line environment that was not as demanding or as immersive as some virtual worlds and gaming sites. Scott’s belief that one’s room is such a strong metaphor for one’s personal being led him and his partners to fashion a website that allows users to creatively organize, display and share their social identity through the structure and style of their own virtual rooms.
Users (or “Raiders”) furnish their rooms with customizable furniture- and accessory-inspired Furnii. Furnii are multi-media widgets, which function as micro-blogs. Unlike other virtual-world networking sites where furniture is just for decoration, users can upload Furnii with a variety of media, from photos to videos to music to text. In addition, each Furnii is “covered” by what RaidMyRoom calls a “skin,” or any image that presumably relates to the media or user content within.
For instance, a user may furnish his room with the image (aka skin) of an orange mp3-player which holds video and music from his favorite band. Another example is the use of a logo for a favorite sports team as a skin and uploading into that Furnii pictures, videos, and a blog related to that team. The customized combination of the image as it is seen, and the content within, constitutes a Furnii. Using these examples, this particular user’s room would contain two Furnii - one that looks like an mp3-player and one that has a sports team’s logo as its exterior. If other users want to see what media is contained in these Furnii, they could, as with most desktop applications, open these Furnii by double clicking them. They would then see and/or hear the pictures, videos, blog text and music that the Furnii creator uploaded to these two Furnii.
Furnii are the basis of all networking activity on RaidMyRoom. As the name suggests, RaidMyRoom provocatively invites people to raid each other’s rooms. This is done by exploring other rooms, and upon seeing a Furnii that is desired, “raiding” it. If a user sees a Furnii she likes, and raids it, that Furnii and all of its content now exists in her room. If you want to network with another user who has a Furnii inspired by a common interest, then you can “raid” that Furnii and add your own content to it. Others can then raid that Furnii and take it back to their rooms too. By taking a Furnii you like back to your own room, your network begins growing through this shared widget. Whether it is filled with content about The Jonas Brothers or The New York Yankees, this Furnii has now become an expanding vessel, both in users and content.
Furnii are utilized by RaidMyRoom users as portals to their own and each other’s stored media, as well as by advertisers, who employ them as portals to their products and brands. Advertisers can also use traditional banner advertising in various areas of RaidMyRoom’s site.
