Raeez Lorgat

Raeez Lorgat (born May 24, 1990), is a South African scientist. An alumnus of many mathematics, science and informatics olympiads, Raeez won the Computer Science 1st place and Best of Category grand awards at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in 2007 at the age of sixteen. He was also the grand award winner of the Eskom Expo for young scientists and was awarded the Intel Innovation in IT prize. MIT's lincoln labs named minor planet 23122 Lorgat after Raeez in commemoration for his research project in education technology titled "Computer Aided Instruction in the the Modern Classroom".
Early life
Raeez Lorgat was born in May 1990 to a South African family in the coastal city of Cape Town, Western Cape. He began learning to write computer programs at the early age of eleven - a fact he cites as the impetus behind his success in various science and mathematics olympiads throughout his high-school years.
Teenage Years
Raeez attended Rondebosch Boys' High School in Cape Town where he participated in many national and international science and mathematics olympiads, with a distinct focus on applied problem solving. Notable awards include multiple medals in the South African Computer Olympiad, The Shuttleworth Silver Python Prize and The Intel Innovation in IT Prize .
IOI Squad
Raeez served as a member of the South African IOI squad. As a member of this team, he was taught computer science at training camps held at the University of Cape Town (UCT), generated problems for his peers to solve and gave presentations on the Design and Analysis of Data Structures and Algorithms.
Eskom Expo for Young Scientists
Lorgat was awarded a gold medal and one of three Grand Awards at the 2006 Eskom Expo for Young Scientists, held in Pretoria. He entered with the research project titled "Computer Aided Instruction in the Modern Classroom".
Intel International Science and Engeneering Fair
Lorgat was a finalist selected to attend ISEF 2007 as one of three South African delegates. His project was a continuation of the research project "Computer Aided Instruction in the Modern Classroom", and was awarded both the Best of Category Grand Award and the 1st place in Computer Science Grand Award. Notable prizes included $8000 in prize-money and the naming of a minor planet 23122 Lorgat.
Recent events
Lorgat was featured in an interview on Randall Abraham's and Angela Guestella's Point of View as a 'techno-genius from Cape Town'. The interview was broadcast on Heart FM across Southern Africa over the world cup festivity holiday in 2010.<ref name="techno-genius from cape town"/>
