Plathubis the Gray Fox is an ancient Latvian myth. In the legend, Plathubis was the bringer of the clouds in the sky. It is said that its vocalizations brought giant gray clouds that lasted for years to block the sun and kill the crops of farmers. Over time, Plathubis' wish came true and crops and livestock died. One day, a sickened group of farmers pursued Plathubis in his forest home with weapons, determined to kill the sinister beast. They searched for days wihout rest but they could not find Plathubis and died in the very depths of the woods. After Latvian residents were aware of the deaths, the entire town chased away Plathubis to the edge of the Baltic Sea, where he drowned to his death. The residents knew that every time a storm raged in the Baltic Sea, it was Plathubis and his horrid rage creating the catastrophe. But the clouds dissolved and the glory of the sun brought back the crops and the disaster ended. Story Influence This particular myth most likely has German influence, somehow passed over to the Latvian culture. Very little is known about this extremely rare myth as it has faded from Latvian folktales over time, most likely due to its German origin.
