Phil Mims

Phil Mims, b. 1952 in Indiana, is one of the most successful examples of multi-level marketing (MLM) activity. Mims dropped out of college after two years as he desired to become an entrepreneur, first starting a landscaping business and then founding a successful wholesale jewelry manufacturing and sales company. Married to Lucie with whom he has a daughter, Rebbecca and with three sons from his previous marriage, Derrick, Shayne and Robert, Mims took a gamble in starting his first MLM business in 1991 both against his family's wishes and with the then new concept of selling long-distance services through network marketing with the then nascent Excel Communications.

It was a good call from Mims. By the mid 90's, he had become part of the 'Excel Phenomenon', as documented in the book of the same name by James W. Robinson, and became one of the very top earners in the history of MLM, earning millions of dollars by using basic principles of other successful MLM leaders utilising personal integrity and a burning desire to help others less fortunate to better themselves. This attitude helped Mims to build a huge organization of over 527,000 independent Representatives, several of whom also became millionaires. He explained, "I have a heart for the less fortunate and feel that I have been rewarded to be able to give time and financial support to lighten others loads, all to leave a mark in this world."

Mims, who had previously served in the Army and received a Bronze Star for his tour in Vietnam, was a major contributor to Mark Yarnell's seminal work about MLM, entitled 'Your first year in Network marketing". Referring to the self- development aspect of networking, Mims was quoted as saying " WHAT ONE BUILDS IN NETWORK MARKETING, WHAT ONE EARNS, AND WHAT ONE CREATES, IS NOT NEARLY AS IMPORTANT AS WHAT ONE BECOMES"

Mims retired to the magnificent mountains of Colorado where he and his wife run a luxury B&B hotel called the BlackBearManor. He enjoys fishing and high trail hiking.
