Peter John is a British barrister, a Labour Councillor in Southwark, South London, and leader of the opposition on Southwark Council. John was first elected councillor for South Camberwell in 2002. He became the leader of the Labour Group in 2004. Labour won the popular vote in Southwark in 2006, with nearly 40% of the vote. However the 28 Labours members elected fell short of the 33 members needed for an overall majority and the council is currently controlled by a Liberal Democrat and Conservative coalition. The defection of former Liberal Democrat Cllr Danny McCarthy in November 2006, resulted in the Labour Group in Southwark becoming the largest group on the Council with 29 members. The more recent defection of Peckham councillor Ola Oyewunmi from the Labour Party leaves Cllr. John's group neck and neck with the Liberal Democrats. John is involved in a number of local organisations including the St Olave & Bermondsey United Charities and the Beormund Community Centre.
