Peter Mann was born in Somerset in April 1951. Bishops Wordsworth School Salisbury; The University of Reading 1970-1974 B.Ed (Hons) and Loughborough University 1975-76 M.Sc.. Joined Portsmouth City Council in 1976 as Senior Recreation Officer, progressing to Principal Officer in 1979. Prepared the City’s first ever leisure strategy and was the lead officer on the development of the Mountbatten Leisure Complex at Alexandra Park. Offered the position as the Director of Leisure Services but moved in to the private sector in 1982. Joined the Crest Nicholson Group plc in October 1982 as the Marketing Manager for en-tout-cas, the leading sports surfaces and equipment company worldwide (with ‘By Royal Appointment’ in the UK). Mann led the marketing division, introducing many new products and services including the Sportsturf synthetic grass surface which became one of the most successful all-weather pitch surfaces around the world. Promoted to Regional Director for the South-East Division in 1985. He was then appointed as a strategic advisor to the CEO of Crest Nicholson to provide new product and services development in 1988 which led to the creation of a new sport and leisure management consultancy, Strategic Leisure. When Crest Nicholson disposed of their leisure interests, Mann completed a management buyout of the company. He developed Strategic Leisure in to one of the best known and leading independent UK consultancies in sport and leisure and grew the business in to one of the most successful firms in the sector. In 1994, he sold the business to Mouchel staying on for 15 months to help ensure a successful integration with Mouchel’s complementary professional services teams in town planning, consultant engineering and management consulting. In 1996, he then founded a new management consultancy in sport and leisure, the Peter Mann Partnership and grew this business in to one of the market leaders in this sector. The company re-branded to become PMP Consultancy, then pmp and then following a merger, pmpgenesis with offices in London and Manchester. This company was never a financial success and went into administration in July 2010. For the past five years, Mann has led pmplegacy the major events division within the business. This was sold when PMP went broke. Peter claims to have become a leading expert in the planning and bidding of major sporting events including Olympic & Paralympic Games; Commonwealth Games; World Cups in Football, Rugby and Cricket and World Championships. He is an advisor to the IOC on major event legacy planning and implementation and has advised many cities and countries around the world on event bidding and planning, including World Cup Barbados, Madrid 2016; Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and the London Olympic Authority (2012). He is a regular keynote speaker at international conferences including SportAccord, Soccerex, Peace & Sport and Legacy Lives. Mann is on the board of Business in Sport and Leisure (BISL) , the Major Sporting Event Infrastructure Group at UK Trade & Investment and is Chair of the Institute for Sport, Parks and Leisure (ISPAL) . He is a founder member of the project working group for the creation of the Chartered Institute of Sport (CIS) which it is hoped will be granted a Royal Charter by late 2010. Away from his professional life, he is a keen golfer (a member at West Sussex, Saunton and Provence CC) and family man with his wife, son and daughter and is happiest when playing the links courses in Scotland or Ireland or walking around the headlands of the North Devon coast.
