Rev. Fr. Pere Di Elbreil (1908-1964), better known as Elbariel, was a Missionary of East priest, philosopher and philanthropist from France. He was acknowledged as a social reformer during 1940s. He is remembered for constructing schools and convents in and around Kallakurichi taluk, India along with S.V.S.Rathinam a Philontherapist. Early life Rev. Pere Di Elbreil was born near Montabon in France. He got a Ph.D. in Social service at Rome in Gregorian University. Then he became a Missionary of East Priest. Social service He arrived at the Diocese of Pondicherry on May 22, 1935. He had chosen Kallakurichi taluk to start his service. He constructed more than seven convents, two orphanages and multiple schools. He released more than two hundred families from bonded slavery. Christianity and Rev. Pere Di Elbreil Pere Di Elbreil babtised more than ten thousand people as Catholics around Kallakurichi and Virudhachalam taluk along with his disciples. S.V.S. Rathinam his disciple When Pere DI Elbreil came to Kallakurichi, S.V.S.Rathinam served as Headmaster at Ulagankathan school. Rathinam left his Government job and became Pere Di Elbreil’s chief disciple. He took part in all his ventures. Writings He compiled many dramas in English and Tamil. *”Yesuvin Paadugal” *”Christ and Me” Final Years Pere Di Elbreil left India on January 17, 1947. He diedin Montabon, on November 10, 1988.
