Plant Design System

Plant Design System is a systematic engineering method for designing industrial plants through a multidisciplinary engineering activity. Abbreviation of the title (PDS) is also used for a software provided by Intergraph Corporation for laying out and designing industrial plants such as oil refineries, power stations, mine processing plants, smelters, offshore platforms, FPSO's and more. PDS is mainly used as enterprise software.
Explained simply, using this software one can create a 3D model of a plant for visualisation of the proposed plant. Processes can be used that check to see if there are any clashes in that model. From the model one can also extract a complete listing of all the components that need to be purchased for that plant. Lengths of pipes, numbers of flanges, numbers of columns and their sizes etc. You can also extract many of the plans and drawings that are required to build that plant.
PDS and other competitive solutions such as PDMS were developed in the 70's and 80's. They are still reliable solutions but some companies are switching to other software solutions such as Intergraph's SmartPlant 3D or Aveva's Everything 3D.
Some of the modules that PDS covers are as follows.
;1) PDS 3D Theory
;2) MicroStation for PDS-3D
;3) Creating Equipment Models with PDS-3D
;4) Extracting Orthographic Drawings with PDS-3D
;5) Creating Piping Models with PDS-3D
;6) Clash Detection
;7) Spec Writing for PDS- 3D
;8) Writing Reports using PDS-3D
;9) Electrical Raceway Modeling
;10) HVAC - Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning
SmartPlant 3D includes pipe supports, cables, offshore structural members and more.
