Pawa up first is an instrumental Post-rock band based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The four musicians forming the core of the group are founding member and main composer Serge Nakauchi Pelletier (on guitar and MPC), Mathieu Pontbriand (on bass), Joseph Perrault (on drums) and Sandy Belfort (on keyboards). The group is known for collaborating with other musicians such as horn and string players, percussionists, and the occasional rapper or vocalist. Pawa Up First's sound is often described as being very 'cinematic', with heavy influences from film music composers (think Ennio Morricone, Philip Glass, Angelo Badalamenti) but also mixing in elements of indie-rock, jazz, hip hop and electronic music in a very subtle fashion. Pawa Up First's music can be heard in several films and documentaries, most notably in Jean-Marc Vallée's 2011 film Café de Flore with the song 'Big Freeze' (featuring UK artist Belle Humble). PUF started up as a recording project in 2001 and became an official band around 2005 when the first album 'The Scenario' came out on Montreal label Dare to Care Records. The band then went on performing live at several festivals and events such as the Montreal International Jazz Festival, Osheaga Festival, the Toronto International Film Festival, South By Southwest and New York City's CMJ Music Marathon. They've also been to Europe twice to tour, mostly in France. They won a Felix (the Quebec equivalent of Canada's Junos) for 'Instrumental Album of the Year' in 2013 for their 'Missing Time' album, after being nominated in the same category several times in the past.
