Paul Summerville is an investment banker and academic, who is currently running for Canada's Parliament in the 2012 federal by-election in Victoria as the Liberal Party of Canada candidate. Personal Life Summerville was born in London, England, raised in Scarborough, Canada, and worked in Toyko, Japan. He moved to Victoria, British Columbia in 2006 after running unsuccessfully for the New Democratic Party in the Toronto riding of . He is currently the Liberal Party candidate in the 2012 Victoria by-election. He is married to Taeko and has one son, Michael. Education Paul Summerville completed his undergraduate degree in History/Political Science at York University in Toronto and spent his third year at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He completed a Master’s Degree at the University of Alberta in Political Science. His thesis was "The Political Economy of State Oil Companies: The Cases of Brazil, Norway and Canada". He completed two years towards a Ph.D. in International Relations at the Graduate Institute of International Studies (Geneva) and the University of Alberta where he completed his Ph.D. comprehensive exams. He studied Japanese at the Osaka University for Foreign Languages, and completed a Ph.D. in International Relations at the University of Tokyo. His thesis was "The Politics of Self-Restraint: The Japanese State, and the Voluntary Export Restraint of Japanese Passenger Car Exports to the US in 1981". Economics career After graduation, Summerville began a twenty year career in investment banking. He worked in Tokyo from 1988-1990 as a staff economist at Deutsche Bank, from 1990-1992 as Chief Economist with Jardine Fleming, and from 1993-1994 as Equity Research Director with Lehman Brothers. In 1995 Paul returned to Canada where he worked as Chief Economist and Head of Equity Research for Richardson Greenshields and following the merger with RBC Dominion Securities as Chief Economist. In 2000 he returned to Tokyo as Branch Manager for and then from 2001-2004 was head of the and head of Asia-Pacific. He had a regular column in the Nikkei Weekly and Financial Post. Over the course of his career Paul has been widely published in, and widely quoted by, the international media. He has published in the New York Times, Asian Wall Street Journal, Financial Post, Globe and Mail, International Herald Tribune, National Post and Nikkei Weekly. He has appeared on ABC, BBC, CNN, CBC, CTV, CBS, NBC, NHK, PBS, and The Agenda with Steve Paikin. Political career After being recruited by Jack Layton, Paul ran in the 2006 Canadian federal election as a member of the New Democratic Party in the Toronto riding of . His candidacy was given an unusual level of media coverage in part because of his against-type NDP candidacy. He placed third after Liberal incumbent Carolyn Bennett and Conservative Peter Kent. Summerville then joined the Liberal Party of Canada to support the candidacy of Leadership contender Bob Rae. He recently ran for the position of National Policy Chair for the Liberal Party of Canada, losing by seven votes.
