Situated in the Times Square area, the business opened as the Oyster Bay Restaurant in 1900. Prior to that it was called Fay's Restaurant.
It closed due to financial difficulties in July 1940. The New York Supreme Court ordered the sale of all of the eatery's furnishings and
fixtures in order to satisfy creditors' claims.
Bankruptcy precedes transformation to apartment property
This was accomplished on July 18, 1940, with sales amounting to $2,500, or 2 cents on the dollar per creditor. Owner Edmund Sens, proprietor
of the Oyster Bay Restaurant since 1922, was sick for several years prior to the restaurant's failure. His illness was the primary reason for the establishment's financial travails.
In August 1940 the property at 674 - 676 8th Avenue and 274 West 43rd Street was leased from the Henry Youngs estate of California, for a lengthy term. The ground floor, comprising 5,200 square feet, was reopened as a restaurant, following extensive remodeling. The new tenant was
Floradell Foods, Inc. At this time there were two four-story buildings on the 8th Avenue side and a one-story building which ran through to 43rd
Street. The four-story building, which contained two stores and seven apartments, at 103 - 105 West 82nd Street, was sold by Vivien R.
Walsh to Walter H. Cooper. The property value was assessed at $27,000, of which $21,000 was land value.
