Owen Bannigan (1962/1963 - 23 May 2014) was an Irish Fine Gael politician and beef and dairy farmer. He was first elected to Monaghan County Council in June 1999 and was subsequently re-elected in 2004 and 2009. He died suddenly while out canvassing on election day, 2014. The election had to be cancelled as a result. All the ballots cast were officially destroyed. He had been expected to top the poll. Bannigan was Cathaoirleach of Monaghan County Council between 2004 and 2005.<ref name=rte_death/> He lived in Carrickatee. He had five children.<ref namerte_death/> One of his sons plays football for the Monaghan Gaelic football team. Bannigan's death led to their match against Tyrone being postponed, as a mark of respect.<ref nameindependent_death/>
