History

Open Source Pictures, along with its website, is a brainchild of former television news assignment editor Zachary M. Newmark as part of his studies at the Amsterdam Business School. In April 2007, during the MBA program, Newmark found himself in classes related to information systems, executive strategy, and entrepreneurship. Independent of each other, professors Hans Borgman, Hans Strikwerda, and Tsvi Vinig all referred to advancements in open source acceptability, and how this has greatly affected several business sectors.

Drawing on his entertainment industry background, Newmark toyed with different ideas to open up the film industry to the everyday person. While discussing this with Asian Academy of Film and Television head Sandeep Marwah, Newmark said that the process of developing and producing movies no longer needs to be consolidated in Hollywood and Mumbai.

That is the real purpose behind Open Source Pictures: to make the entertainment industry more accessible to the real people sitting outside the fence. You know what you want to see on screen. Nobody knows that more than you. By sharing and collaborating with everyone else, we will make the movies we have always wanted to see.

As a journalist, Newmark developed many breaking news and investigative stories originating in the Chicago area. After seven years with television station WMAQ-TV, an Emmy award for breaking news, and several other award wins and nominations, Newmark left Chicago for Amsterdam. He will receive his MBA in October 2007.
