Nakia and his Southern Cousins

Nakia & His Southern Cousins are an southern rock, soul band based in Austin, Texas. The band was originally formed in February 2007 to support, "Playing The Cards", the debut EP of lead singer, Nakia. The band originally featured "Frosty" (Bartholomew Eugene Smith-Frost) on drums, who also played drums on several tracks of Nakia's EP.

Nakia decided he needed a band to support the record, but due to the nature of the revolving lineup, he decided to call the band "His Southern Cousins" to reflect the idea that anyone who played with him was like family.

Early on, Nakia felt the need to bring in backing vocalists live to help recreate the sound captured in the studio. He asked his friend Karla Manzur, formerly of Deep Edward and The Jellydots, to sing and help recruit someone else to compliment her style. Jessie England of Snafu Kitties and Manager's Choice was chosen for the job and together they chose to call their duo, *The Fresh Up Girls. The pair are known to leave the stage during performances passing out Fresh-Up gum and collecting tips for the band.

The band is scheduled to perform at the 2008 Austin City Limits Music Festival in Austin, Texas and will be appearing at the 2008 South Padre International Music Festival in South Padre Island, Texas. They also were a part of the inaugural lineup for that festival.

More recently, they were chosen as one of Austin's Best New Bands by The Austin Chronicle in 2008.
