Motive Motion

Motive Motion, M:M or M is an electronic metal (also referred to as industrial metal) band from Coal City, Illinois, formed in 2008 by Tim Palumbo, Nick Palumbo and Kyle Purpura. They are now re-located in the Chicago metropolitan area where all members are originally from. They are known for their rhythmic melodic break downs and political songs.
History
Formed in November 2008, Motive Motion released their first track in January 2009, titled Motion Sickness. Following that release they began a new track entitled Epoch of Sound—"epoch" meaning beginning and used from the band's beginning exploration into music. At the time, recordings were raw and recorded with no compression, making the tracks very vintage sounding and lower in quality.
Tim Palumbo programed most of the electronic ends of the spectrum with the help of the other members while Nick and Kyle wrote on acoustic instruments like guitar, bass, vocals and drum beats. Nick writes most of the lyrics still to this day, while Tim programs the synths and over all foundation of the track.
In 2009 at the end of the release of Epoch of Sound, Nick went to boarding school, which put a hold on the band's production for some months. During that time, Kyle and Tim created tracks that were later scrapped and unreleased. At the return of Nick in mid-late 2009, Stu Mii Kah was recorded and written by Nick about his experience at boarding school and politics. The boarding school was a religious boarding school located in Patterson, Missouri that goes by the name of Teen Challenge. This experience in the lead singer and guitarists life has been a big influence on the groups album To Create and Progress and the schools mission states "To provide youth, adults and families with an effective and comprehensive Christian faith-based solution to life-controlling drug and alcohol problems in order to become productive members of society. By applying biblical principles, Teen Challenge endeavors to help people become mentally-sound, emotionally-balanced, socially-adjusted, physically-well, and spiritually-alive.". The lead singer had no addictions or drug problems.
Tim, Nick and Kyle were the main members from 2008-2010, but in early 2010, Kyle withdrew from the band due to personal issues never explained. Their new album to be released, To Create and Progress, contains songs that were recorded with acoustic bass, but the rest are synthesizers due to the absence of the bassist. After almost one year of releases, Motive Motion released a digital free copy of all their songs to 2009 that included Motion Sickness (Remastered), Epoch of Sound, Qlock Town, Epoch of Sound (Schizophrenic Version) and Stu Mii Kah. This was the marker for creating a full length album.
"In our early days of MM we started with passion. We may not have had the best of the best, but we had what it took to say "This is our track 100% our material" And that's what drove us. From the very start from 'Motion Sickness' our very first release, we loved our time together as artists. Tim, Nick and Kyle, us three, we had a bond so tight. We always had ideas. From short films to music. It was just our thing. No one else may have understood, but it has made us what we are today."
Motive Motion continues to work and strive for their music, but as of May 17, 2011 Motive Motion was re-locating residents, putting a hold on the album.
==="Motion Sickness" (2008)===
In 2008, Motive Motion released their first track, "Motion Sickness". Shortly after in January 2009 a music video was shot for the track in a unincorporated piece of empty land just north of Coal City. The video was shot in a wide angle 16:9 and 720x480. All though at the time, hardware limitations did not provide the full 720x480 aspect ratio when it was released on YouTube and ACIDplanet.com. To this day the group still shoots their own photos and videos as well as directs them and edits.
Stu Mii Kah (2009)
Stu Mii Kah was the first track that was written and recorded after the return of Nick in mid-late 2009. It was a milestone for the group for it was the best track the band had written in months. It also featured the changes of members playing instruments. Nick was writing on the guitar and kyle added and switched to electric bass, which made it a unique never before herd sound. Soon the band followed the technique used in Stu Mii Kah for future tracks.
Quota End (2009)
Quota End was a track that the band had to push out before a time limit was up. Therefore the name Quota End. The track was the next big step in the bands journey into establishing their sound. It was the first track to be mastered successfully. The track remained incomplete for weeks with no vocals or mastering due to the loss of their computer that caught fire. The track was designed on a old XP machine running outdated hardware at Kyles house. The track was then backed up and exported for later use to complete and add vocals and guitar.
Stay
The track Stay was a song that was produced by Tim and Nick at the beginning of the bands foundation. The track was produced somewhere between the time of Motion Sickness and Epoch of Sound. The song was never released until 2010 when it was uploaded to YouTube and became the most popular song by Motive Motion. Later they self released a Digital EP of Stay, including 3 versions: Stay (Extended Version), Stay (Radio Edit), Stay (Vocal Version). The EP also includes a track that was scrapped by Tim and Kyle in 2009 titled Serpigo. Stay was originally recorded with vocals but there were 2 versions including a extended version with no vocals at all. Stay is still the most searched and played song by Motive Motion fans and listeners.
Wheat Grass
Wheat Grass is Motive Motions' own independent record label and video studio. Wheat Grass is mostly seen in many short films by Wheat Grass. Most Wheat Grass videos and shorts end with the "Wheat Grass" or "WG" logo. Wheat Grass was also a volunteer for a local high school in Coal City for film and technology. Wheat Grass crew was allowed into school to import their volunteered video short and shown to students over the high schools announcement TV. The short was a Halloween special shot in a real graveyard and edited to fit a disturbing feel and scenes. The material was questionable to the school staff on whether or not it should be aired. It was decided that the video deemed to graphic to air even though the film contained no graphic scenes or blood. Even though the story was not written by Wheat Grass, the crew was only responsible for the visual FX, camera work, audio engineering, editing and formatting. Wheat Grass has not volunteered for any other projects as of 2009.
Style and Influence
Even though the band has many different styles and it comes surprisingly in their music, they adapted styles such as Metal Music, Industrial Metal, to Melodic Trance and Sadcore
The bands influences are more from industrial Metal, Metal and Trance. One of the main bands include , Apoptygma Berzerk, Combichrist, Rammstien, Korn, and VNV Nation. They have adapted new creativity based off many elements seen and herd by the band.
Name
The name Motive Motion was created by Tim. The name means "To have a motivation, Progress in life and to achieve". Many decipher it as a motive to dance and move. Most of the logos and photo shoots contain the two Ms representing "Motive Motion".
Collaborations and acts
Timothy J Palumbo is behind a lot of his own solo Trance projects such as Vyprosyn, and has been in the EDM scene for over 7 years. In the midst of all his works such as his main act Motive Motion he was introduced to Roy J. Digre also known as Technomancer a Synthpop/EDM artist from Norway. Tim has collaborated with Roy in the past with EPs such as Musika Technologika. Motive Motion is working with Roy on a new EP to be released in Summer 2011. Motive Motion will be featured on the EP.
Lyrics
While Nick writes most of the lyrics, some phrases and lines contain quotes that are said by other members. "I write lyrics, but at any moment Tim or Kyle will interject with some good additives to express more feeling". Most lyrics written have ideas that point to corrupt governments and people. This does not exclude religion. Though the band firmly believes in God, they question not God himself but the people who walk the right path but live the wrong life. Many find the lyrics to be offensive, due to some amounts of questionable material written in the lyrics geared towards hypocritical human behavior.
