Moneycomb

Moneycomb - The Popular 'Pub-Quiz' Style Game

Background

The game is on a number of Paragon SWP and similar machines and is not one of the most popular games, however if it was promoted and was given a 'makeover' you could guarantee that Moneycomb would become a fans favourite. The game is given a 'Bee in a Honeycomb' theme and most of the in game features are related to this

* Catchprase
"Somewhere in the Honeycomb, you will find a Moneycomb"

* Aim of the game
To collect as many Honeydrops as possible by answering questions about specific topics, or by winning in game bonuses whilst playing in a honeycomb.

Playing the game

Start of the game
To begin, the player 'launches' a ball at a number of targets to receive a starting bonus. This can consist of an extra life, an extra pass (known as "bottle it") or both. If the player is extremely unlucky and hits a target with no bonus on it, the player will start with just one life and one "bottle it". The key to success in the 'launch' is timing; eagled-eyed moneycombers will realise that the targets are in a repetitve sequence, so a brief glance at the pattern and a perfectly timed launch will get you a life and a 'bottle it'.

After this the player then chooses to answer questions on one of four topics to play for honeydrop prizes of between one and nine honeydrops. This must be done each round. At the end of each round, two hard working bees collect your honey and put it in jars at the bottom of the screen. The more jars that are filled, the more money you will win.

When the topic of choice has been selected, the player then chooses one of 24 hexagons in a honeycomb formation. There are four types of hexagon that the player can land on:

**Honey - the honey means that the player can win prizes during the game, in order to win a prize the player must collect as many drops of honey as possible
**Q - this means the player must answer a question on the topic selected. Depending on the success of the bowling at the beginning of the game, the player can select one of three answers (losing a life if a wrong answer is selected) or "bottle it" by passing from answering the question - this option is often popular if the answer is unknown.
**Honeydrop - this takes the player to a bonus area, where he/she has to watch very carefully as bees fly over a big jar of honey. When the player feels the urge, he/she then presses the 'drop' button to watch the bee over the jar release its drops of honey. The drops are then added to the total accumulated honey drops gained, in order to achieve a prize.
**? - This selection takes the player to a special sub-game bonus screen, explained below.

Bonus Play '?'

The bonus screen gives the player several chances, but these chances are not necessarily good. Four visible boxes are shown to the player, these are then covered and shuffled so the player must follow the box he wants to choose very carefully. As seen before, this is a game of high skill. There are several options which the player may face in the bonus stage of the game:

Good Bonuses

**Reveal - this returns to the 24 hexagons to reveal what is behind each one.
**Advance to prize - this advances the player to the next prize available, regardless of the amount of drops of honey already collected.
**Honey - this gives the player an extra honey drop
**Shuffle - this reveals what is behind each hexagon, but also shuffles the hexagons into different positions

Bad Bonuses

**Bee in a bonnet - If you can imagine having bees surrounding your hat, this replicates that feeling! The time speeds up, meaning you must answer the questions quickly and choose your hexagons quickly. It increases the chance of losing the game and getting incorrect answers
**Lock the honeycomb - This locks your collected honey drops from this round so you cannot add them to your total collection.
**Comb - Over! - This marks the end to your Moneycomb experience. A bee with hair appears on the screen and uses a Comb to shift all his hair to one side, hence 'comb over'. This is a slight deviation from the 'bee in a honeycomb' theme, but it cleverly uses the 'comb' theme to signal the end of your game.
**Scams

Summary

Overall moneycomb is a rollercoaster game of ups and downs and requires various amounts of skill to win a a prize. Moneycomb is not a SCAM, when you get used to playing it, it becomes gradually easier to cosistently win money. However true fans of moneycomb will always tell you that its more the experience gained from playing moneycomb that counts and not the money that is won from it. Indeed it is common practice to play other games to obtain money in order to play moneycomb, although it is not impossible to win modest amounts consistently.
