Michael Nering (born 1968) is the Assistant Vice President of Psychometrics and Research at Measured Progress, Inc. He is best known for his research in Item Response Theory, especially in the areas of polytomous item response theory models, person fit and computer-adaptive testing. A comprehensive Research Framework exits at Measured Progress where some of Nering's research can be found. Nering's 1995 article "The Distribution of Person Fit Using True and Estimated Person Parameters" demonstrated that when examinee ability is estimated, a person fit statistic's small-sample distribution may be inadequately approximated by its asymptotic distribution. A second paper, co-authored with Rob R. Meijer, compared two of the most widely used person fit statistics in the psychometric literature. Nering is also a co-author of a book on polytomous Item Response Theory models. His work in computer-adaptive testing began at the University of Minnesota with David Weiss, a noted expert in the field.
