Matt Windman

Matt Windman is chief theater critic of amNewYork, a free daily New York City newspaper with the largest circulation in Manhattan. He first joined the paper in 2004 as a writer and became theater critic in July 2005.

Windman's reviews express a brash and satirical, but honest and objective writing style. He received a lot of attention for his rave review of the 2007 Broadway revival of Grease, which was widely panned elsewhere.

He writes an official theater blog of Broadway and Off-Broadway news and reviews, theater interviews a weekly theater column, and performs streaming audio podcasts. Recent interviews have included playwright David Greenspan, playwright Paul Rudnick, actress Andrea McArdle, and composer William Finn.

In June 2008, Windman predicted the highest number of Tony Awards of any journalist on Gold Derby.

Windman received his Bachelors degree in Journalism and Dramatic Literature from New York University. He grew up in Marlboro Township, New Jersey, and attended French Woods Festival of the Performing Arts in Hancock, NY. He now lives in the East Village in New York City.

Director Sullivan's version of Shakespeare's play is not the one this author wrote. Note, in Shakespeare's version, Portia has to ask in the courtroom, "Which here is the Jew and which the Christian?" Sullivan saves the line by having Shylock wear a skullcap. So did he improve on Shakespeare? But if you wish to know more about Shakespeare's play, try clicking on the following web-site which gives an analysis originally posed by actor-director Abraham Morevski about 90 years ago, which he originally wrote in Yiddish. You will be surprised, I promise:
