Matthew David Peterson (born February 11, 1982 in Alexandria, Louisiana) is a right-handed relief pitcher currently in the Florida Marlins organization. He has played in the minor leagues for eight years. Early life Peterson attended Rapides High School. He played both basketball and baseball his junior and senior years with the Mustangs. His baseball team won the District Championship during his junior season. Career Peterson was selected by New York Mets in the 2nd round (65th overall) of the 2000 Major League Baseball Draft. He was rated by Baseball America as the Mets' fourth-best prospect entering the season. On July 30, 2004, the Mets traded him to the Pittsburgh Pirates along with Ty Wigginton and José Bautista for Kris Benson and Jeff Keppinger. The Pirates designated Peterson for assignment in to make room for newly acquired reliever Roberto Hernández on their 40-man roster. In a short time, he was sent back down to Double-A. In , Peterson pitched in the Kansas City Royals organization; he became a free agent at the end of the season and signed a minor league contract with the Florida Marlins.
