Martin Whelton

Martin Whelton, (born 14 February 1975) is a Labour politician in the United Kingdom and Mayor of the London Borough of Merton for the 2008-9 municipal year.
He is as councillor for Pollards Hill ward in the London Borough of Merton and was first elected in 2002 and re-elected in 2006.
Since being elected he has served as Chair of The Way We Work Scrutiny Panel which covered finance and corporate issues from 2006-08, Chair of the Street Management Panel from 2002-04, Chair of the Mitcham Area Forum from 2004-6 and from 2003-06 he was the first Chair of the Licensing Committee which took over responsibility for liquor licensing from the magistrates.
At the 2001 General Election he was also the Labour candidate in South West Surrey.
Martin Whelton attended The John Fisher School in Purley and has a BA in Politics from the University of Essex from which he graduated in 1997.
In March 2006, he created Blogging4Merton a blog about his life as a councillor and life in general.
