Paul Rexe

Paul Rexe (John Paul Rexe; born June 4, 1944) is a politician, educator, writer, and farmer from Peterborough, Ontario.
Education
Paul Rexe was part of the first graduating class of Trent University. He holds several degrees, including a BA in history and economics. Encouraged by Dr. Tom Symons and Dr. Bruce Hodgins, Paul began and completed an M.A. in Canadian Studies with a focus on developing Recreation Policy in Ontario. He earned his Chartered Director designation from McMaster University.

Politician
At 28 Rexe was first elected to Peterborough City Council in 1972 and served as the chair of finance, chair of personnel and chair of the committee of the whole. He was a Councillor from 1971-73, 1980-87, and 2003-2006. He served as the Chair of Finance and Audit Committee and was a member of over 40 other municipal committees.
He sat on the boards of the Canadian Canoe Museum, The Greater Peterborough Area Economic Development Corporation, the City of Peterborough Holdings Inc., Peterborough Distribution Inc., Lakefield Distribution Inc., Norwood Asphodel Distribution Inc., Peterborough Utilities Services Inc. and is the past chair of the Kenner Foundation. His platform focussed on six priorities: fiscal sustainability, infrastructure, security of people and property, community lifestyle, community planning and development, and effective governance<ref name="mykawartha.com"/>.
Municipal
Rexe served as a candidate for the NDP in 1980 and 1981; in addition he ran as a municipal politician in the wards where he lived, leading the polls each time he was elected. He ran and was elected as the senior alderman for Otonabee Ward. During his early municipal career he advocated the capital reserve system along with Deputy Treasurer Ed DeHaan, which today has saved the city millions of dollars in interest costs. He also introduced senior citizen bus passes which allowed seniors to utilize the public transit system at a reduced cost.
Federal
He ran as the candidate in the Peterborough electoral district in the Federal General Election for the NDP in 1979.
Writer
Rexe held a weekly column at the Peterborough Examiner titled "Rexe Appeal." Three times he was nominated and three times a finalist for best columnist for newspapers under 100,000 circulation, he tackled local issues with insight, enthusiasm and great relish.
Educator
Rexe was a teacher at Thomas A. Stewart Secondary<ref name="mykawartha.com"/>. He was also an adjunct professor with Queen's University, teaching courses on Critical Issues and Policies in the Queen's-Trent Concurrent Education Programme<ref name="thedirectorscollege.com"/>.
He was also Director of the Trent University Archaeological Field School.
Farmer
After his early municipal career he and his ex-wife Ann purchased a farm in Asphodel and he became a proud farmer, breeding, judging and promoting Simmental Cattle in Eastern Ontario.
