Marta Grigorieva

Marta Grigorieva is a portrait painter whose paintings are in private collections in Britain, America, and Europe; and her work has been exhibited in New York, London, Turin and Milan.
Marta, the daughter of two doctors, began her career by studying economics in St Petersburg University (1985-1990), then, after discovering her passion for painting, switched to studying fine arts at Harvard (1996-1997).
With the advent of Perestroika, in 1990 she moved to Manhattan, where she later worked at Christie's Russian department, specialising in the works of Faberge. File:Marta Grigorieva.jpg
After studying with celebrated American portrait painter, Nelson Shanks, whose subjects include Diana, Princess of Wales, Margaret Thatcher and President Clinton, Marta began to carve out a career as a portrait painter in her own right.
As the accolades for her work flooded in, she exhibited at Harvard, then Sotheby's and, at the request for late Senator Ted Kennedy, painted The New England Patriots, his favourite football team.

Now a fully-fledged artist, she took up invitations to work on commissions in Piedmont, Italy, spending five years there from 2001 to 2006, years in which she executed a dazzlingly varied array of work from landscapes to portraits. File:Artist in studio.jpg
In 2006, Marta began basing herself in London where her work was extensively exhibited and her reputation grew. More recently, she has painted an acclaimed portrait of Bee Gee's, Robin John Gibb,
and Professor Robert Mundell, the recipient of the Nobel Prize in Economics.
Ask Marta to name the artistic influences that have shaped her career and she lists an eclectic group of artists: John Singer Sargent, Van Dyck, Rembrand, Reynolds, and Matisse.

A meeting with Lucian Freud in London, and another with Jeff Koons, Alex Catz and Larry Rivers all served to nourish and expand Marta's innovative artistic vision.
Devoted to the expression of beauty, Marta's art is characterised by impressionist palette, and subjects drawn from life, pushed towards abstraction. Marta's exceptional use of colour and light facilitates and further enhances the depiction of a subject's mood, character and personality, and by painting her subjects from a variety of view points on the canvas, Marta projects them in all their kaleidoscopic glory.
