Mark W. Cannon was a professor of political science and head of the political science department at Brigham Young University (BYU). He was also involved in many political endeavors. Cannon received a Ph.D. in political economy and government from Harvard University. He served for 13 years as an administrative assistant to Warren E. Burger, the first person to serve as administrative assistant to the Chief Justice. He also was an administrative assistant to Wallace Bennett. He also served as the director of the Institute of Public Administration and was a founding owner of Geneva Steel. Cannon is a descendant of George Q. Cannon and is a Latter-day Saint. Cannon was among the editors of the book Views from the Bench. Open Library gives the impression that this Mark Cannon also wrote Urban Government for Valencia, Venezuela, but this may be a false linking of authors with the same name.
