Tommy Sowers

Tommy Sowers is an educator, politician, and former military officer. He has announced that he is running against incumbent Jo Ann Emerson to serve (map) in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Biography
A fourth-generation Missourian, Tommy was born and raised in Rolla where his family has lived since his grandfather started the local newspaper. Educated in the public school system, he graduated from Rolla High School. After going to Duke on an Army R.O.T.C. scholarship, Tommy began his 11 year career in the U.S. Army, commissioned in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He served one tour of duty in Kosovo and two in Iraq as a Special Forces officer. Tommy most recently served as an Assistant Professor at the United States Military Academy at West Point. He is currently teaching in the History and Political Science Department at the Missouri University of Science and Technology and running for the United States House of Representatives in Missouri's 8th congressional district.
Educational Career
Background
Tommy began his education in Rolla, MO where he graduated from Rolla's Public High School. He than went on to graduate with honors from Duke with a degree in Public Policy, a certificate in Markets and Management and was a Distinguished Military Graduate. Selected as a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar to represent district 6080 of Southern Missouri, Tommy attended graduate school at the London School of Economics. There he earned the mark of "Distinction" with a Masters of Science in Public Policy, awarded to the top three graduates. He is currently completing his PhD in Government through LSE and has presented his research on four continents.
Educator
From 2006-2009, he served as an Assistant Professor at West Point's Department of Social Sciences. While there, Tommy taught courses in American Politics and Mass Media and Politics. He was nominated for the APGAR Award for Excellence in Teaching. While teaching he was selected as a term member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He is currently teaching in the History and Political Science Department at the Missouri University of Science and Technology.
Military Career
Tommy attended Duke on an Army R.O.T.C. scholarship, where he went on to lead the R.O.T.C. Batallion there. Tommy then began his 11 year career in the U.S. Army, commissioned in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He graduated Airborne, Air Assault, Ranger and Belgian Commando Schools. Stationed in Germany, Tommy led a combat engineering platoon in Kosovo, represented the 1st Infantry Division in the Best Ranger, and captained a team in the Armed Forces Eco Challenge. Tommy later attended the Special Forces Qualification Course where he graduated 1st in his class. At 10th Special Forces Group, Tommy led a HALO Operational Detachment - Alpha of 12 Green Berets. In two deployments to Iraq in 2004-2006, he conducted a wide range of counterinsurgency operations and was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge and two Bronze Stars. Tommy served out the remainder of his military career as an Assistant Professor at the United States Military Academy.
Political Career
Tommy returned home when asked to run for the U.S. House of Representatives. He is a Democratic candidate to represent (map). He is running on the following platform: To bring economic opportunity back to one of the poorest districts in America, to return Congress to its constitutional role by watching over the Treasury and holding the executive and the bureaucracy fiscally accountable, and to renew the social contract of what it means to be a citizen and expand opportunities for Americans to serve their country.
