Mark Tinkler (born 26 April 1961) is an Anglo-Canadian baritone, conductor and opera director. Early life and education Born in Canada, Mark Tinkler was brought to Britain by his British mother, who settled back in her home town of Cambridge. He was a chorister at St John’s College, Cambridge under George Guest and alongside Simon Keenlyside. He went on with Keenlyside to study at the Royal Northern College under , where he won the Robin Kay Memorial Prize for Opera Singing, the Oldham Foundation Award, and the Elsie Sykes Fellowship. A fellow student was Sian Edwards, and they subsequently both appeared at Scottish Opera and Glyndebourne Festival Opera. Career Tinkler sang Guglielmo in Glyndebourne’s Cosi Fan Tutte before moving to Scottish Opera, where he performed the roles of Moralès (Carmen), Billy Budd and Maximilian ( Candide). He was Rapunzel's Prince in the London production of Into the Woods. In his late 20s, Tinkler developed a problem with his voice which forced him to give up singing. He moved into direction instead, directing, for Scottish Opera, Hansel and Gretel, Carmen, Macbeth, Nozze di Figaro and Turn of the Screw. In 1993, he co-founded the English Pocket Opera Company, which now specialises in bringing opera to schools. In 2014, Tinkler founded Cams Music Trust to encourage community music-making. Personal life Mark Tinkler is married to the artist and stage-designer Annabel Lee. They have two children.
