Marathon Singh

Marathon Singh (Jagjit Singh) is the first Sikh to have completed not only 111 full marathons but have also done it in seven continents. He has raised over £10,000 during these 111 full marathons.
The most recent marathon, the Ice Marathon, was completed in Antarctica, on 20 November 2013. Marathon Singh started collecting for sevencharities to mark the membership of the seven continents club. Jagjit is also a strict vegetarian.

1.Childhood and Life
Jagjit Singh was born in Hardo Phrohla Punjab, India 4th January 1959, the youngest of four children. Jagjit Singh was taught running by his father from the age of four. As he got older he had to do many things as his education, farming and he had to take care of the house at a young age. Jagjit was inspired to run by his dad who was in the Indian Army. Jagjit's father has many awards of running in cross country. His father has certificates to show him coming first or second in his country. His mother sadly past away in 1988, due to breast cancer. He was determined to run for charity after his mother’s death. He emigrated to England in 1989 and lived in England with a job in West London, Hayes. Jagjit got married to his wife in 2000 and was blessed with his daughter in October 2000. Three years later he had his son also in October 2003. He came to England thinking that he wants to run marathons. Jagjit ran his first marathon, the Flora London Marathon 2004. At first, he could not get an entry but he ran for ‘Get Kids Going’ and raised £1800. From then he started running for charity and wanted to do it in the remberance of his mother. His target was to cover six continents in the memory of his mother and accomplish 100 marathons. He never thought he would set foot on Antarctica for his mother, father, wife, daughter and his son. At 40years, he took seriously to running and ended up in international marathon events. When he ran his first marathon, the London marathon, he found it quite hard. He used to run up to 30 kilometers easily and wanted to run a marathon. From there on, all the way from 2004, running marathons became a hobby. Jagjit Singh is 172 cm (5 ft. 8 in) tall and weighs 68 kg (149 lb). Jagjit usually follows a simple diet, and is a strict lacto vegetarian ( A non-egg eating vegetarian), and is also strictly against the consumption of alcohol and smoking of cigarettes.
Jagjit thinks that the first 3 miles of a marathon are difficult, but later on into the marathon it becomes slightly easier.
2.Clubs
Jagjit Singh is a member of four clubs: UK Athletics, BA running club, the 100 marathon club and just recently I have joined the exclusive 7continent marathon club. These clubs are very useful in marathons.

4.Awards
In March 2005 Jagjit was awarded in the House of Commons, in Central London, the organization of Punjabi’s in Britain award. This organization is run by MP John McDonald and twelve other Members of Parliament. Jagjit was honored for his work in sports and charity. In March 2007, Jagjit was honored a second time, at once again the House of Commons. Then Jagjit was honored in India in 2013 by the ex-cabinet Minister of Punjab, Bibi Satwant Kaur for sports and charity work, similar or even the same reason Jagjit was honored in 2005 and 2007.
5.Local Community Elections
In 2006 and 2010, as a Labour member, Jagjit helped Labour with campaigning for the local MPs in Hayes, Hillingdon and Ealing. He is still currently a member of the Labour party.
