Maktoob Media

Maktoob Media is an Indian news and opinion website published by Maktoob Media Pvt. Ltd. It was founded in 2014 by editors Aslah Kayyalakkath and Naseel Voici. Maktoob publishes news and features in both English and Malayalam languages.
History
An exclusive video posted by Maktoob Media shows that the Delhi Police broke the door of the PG reading room of the Jamia Millia Islamia library and started beating the students in the 2019 Jamia Millia Islamia attack which refers to the forceful entry by Delhi police into the Jamia Millia Islamia university during a confrontation with student anti-CAA protesters that started outside the campus on 15 December 2019. The clip released by Maktoob Media shows students pushing furniture to block the door, which the police tear down to enter. A woman, who appears to be a security guard, is allowed to leave as the police enter the library. Many students, including women, can be seen folding their hands, pleading with the police.
In December 2019, Maktoob’s journalist Shaheen Abdulla was repeatedly attacked by Delhi Police during the reporting of massive CAA. He was beaten up and was taken to Holy Family hospital, Delhi. On the same day, more than two thousand students of Jamia joined the protests against CAA in Delhi.
The Committee to Protect Journalists, which promotes press freedom and defends the rights of journalists around the world had condemned the police action on Journalists including Shaheen.
On 23 January in 2020, Maktoob journalist Shaheen Abdulla was detained in Aligarh. Shaheen was in Aligarh to report the anti-CAA protest led by women in Shahjamal. He was released after around four hours. “When I was covering the protest, some policemen asked me to come with them to the police station. I showed them my Press card, but they didn’t acknowledge it and repeatedly called me an antankavadi .” he told The Hindu.
In 2021 October, Maktoob journalist Meer Faisal was booked under UAPA by Tripura Police over his tweet on 2021 Tripura riots. The Committee to Protect Journalists, demanded the immediate withdrawal of UAPA cases against Meer and other journalists.
Maktoob award
An award was declared for the best online writer of the year 2016 that gradually received favorable responses from people. Vykari Aaryatt, a Dalit research scholar received this award for her article “Balalsanghathinum jaathiyund” (Caste of Rape).
Media campaign
Following the Christchurch mosque attacks in New Zealand, Maktoob Media shared a powerful video on social media of 100 people, including Rohingya refugees and immigrants to Europe and world-renowned rights activist and journalist Yvonne Ridley saying Daud Nabi's final words of peace. Daud Nabi, a 71-year-old former Afghan refugee, greeted 'Hello Brother' to the white supremacist who barged into the mosque he helped found in Christchurch and killed 50 worshipers. The Maktoob Video got global attention and the international media outlets including Al Jazeera and Daily Sabah carried out this video.
Reception
Maktoob journalist Shaheen Abdulla won the Delhi Minorities Commission (DMC) Award in the print and electronic media category in June 2020. “Shaheen is a committed young journalist of substance and promise,” the award committee said. Shaheen’s ground reports on anti-CAA protests in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi Pogrom received recognition.
