Macquarie Global Leadership Program

The Macquarie Global Leadership Program (GLP) is a program offered by Macquarie University to its students that is designed to further international awareness and ability. It is popularly undertaken by students of the university as it is free and offers an opportunity to enhance employment prospects, particularly those focused on an international career. As a large program that has facilitated exchange and volunteer work to thousands of students, it forms a major part of Macquarie University's focus on providing students with an education combined with social and practical skills including volunteer work, internships and working in an international environment.
The program outlines that it aims to produce graduates who have developed skills through communication, creativity, leadership and initiative. At the successful completion of the program, students receive an academic transcript and recognition on their degree.
Components of the Program
In order to fulfuill the requirements of the Global Leadership Program, students must complete the following three components.
Distinguished Speaker Series
Throughout the year a series of distinguished, high profile speakers inform and inspire the Macquarie community. These speakers provide GLP students the opportunity to be exposed to leadership and international experiences of professionals in academia, business, government, international relations and non-profit sectors. The events are compulsory for GLP members and are often in a formal setting. They allow students to network and discuss issues, particularly those associated with the distinguished speaker of the event. Past speakers include George Negus, a famous correspondent and Author, Tony and Maureen Wheeler, Co-Founders of Lonely Planet and Richard Butler, a former United Nations Weapons Inspector in Iraq.
Experiential Credit
The experiential credit component of the GLP requires students to complete a set of academic, cultural, working and volunteer experiences of their choice. All undertakings by students must contain an International Component. These extra-curricula leadership and cultural activities are rewarded with a certain amount of points to which students must attain a minimum of 200 Experiential points to complete this requirement of the GLP.
Examples include going on a student exchange, undertaking an internship, participating in an international event or volunteering.
