A classic problem with ladders is that they tend to tilt when placed on steps and uneven or sloping surfaces. According to Geoffrey Podger, Chief Executive of Health & Safety, Ladder Association: In the UK 30% of all fatal and major fall injuries in the workplace involve ladders. Therefore ladder users and manufacturers have tried to find ways to address the issue of safety measures in ladders including tilting. So far, there are three methods trying to avoid tilting ladders: # Misc.: Wooden boards, bricks, sloped triangle placed under the tilting ladder leg to level it are basic and cheap methods. These are not safe methods. # Attachments: safety levelers attached to the bottom of the ladder legs providing greater safety and generally easy operation once fitted to a ladder. # Integrated solutions in ladder with self-adjusting leveling based on mechanics or pneumatic technology. Due to focus on safety measures when using ladders for industrial purposes, more and more are recommending using scaffolding for longer duration work and where risk assessments recommend alternatives to ladders.
