The La Liga Effect occurs when an forward or midfield football (soccer) player becomes over-hyped due to offensive performances against sub-par defences. The term was originally used in reference to several members of Barcelona FC's 2009 squad, but has now entered popular football jargon in reference to such varied leagues as the Dutch Eredivisie and the Brazilian Serie A . Methodology The standard method of estimating the size of the La Liga Effect on a player's reputation is by comparison with that player's performances (normally gauged through statistical output) in a league in which more emphasis is placed on defense. Examples Uruguayan footballer Diego Forlan had an unimpressive goalscoring record with Manchester United in the Premier League from 2002-04, scoring only ten times in 63 matches. Upon moving to La Liga, first with Villarreal and then moving to Atlético Madrid, Forlan immediately attained a stellar goal-scoring record of 54 in 106 games for Villarreal, and 30 in 53 games for Atlético Madrid . Giuseppe Rossi, currently of Villarreal, had little success plying his goal-scoring trade in England, scoring 1 goal in 5 appearances for Manchester United, and 0 in 11 for Newcastle United. Upon moving to La Liga, however, Rossi has acquired a tally of 22 in 44 for Villareal . Frédéric Kanouté: 14 goals in 60 matches for England's Tottenham Hotspur before scoring 49 in 113 games for Spain's Sevilla .
