L. Sue Baugh is an Evanston, Illinois-based writer, editor and illustrator. She is the author of numerous business writing and reference manuals and, most recently, the non-fiction book Echoes of Earth about the oldest rocks on the planet. The book is a result of an 11-year project with her colleague and co-author, photographer Lynn Martinelli, to document some of the world’s oldest rock and mineral sites in Western Australia, Greenland, the Grand Canyon, and Northwest Canada. The project began as an artistic endeavor but ultimately became a blend of art photography and scientific information. Career Baugh attended the University of Iowa, earning a B.A. in English and Creative Writing. She later received an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She began her career as a writer, editor and indexer for book publishers, including McGraw-Hill, which publishes most of her language arts books and purchased her previous publisher, NTC/Contemporary Publishing Co.; Holt McDougal, formerly McDougal Littell; and Compton's Encyclopedia, published by Encyclopedia Britannica. Baugh began doing freelance work early on, specializing in business and medical writing. Her other writing focused on social issues, beginning in the early 1960s. During the 1980s, Baugh did fundraising for the El Salvador Human Rights Commission and worked with other artists and writers to help broaden workplace opportunities for women and minorities. For more than 30 years, Baugh has pursued an interest in non-Western worldviews, belief systems and cultures. She has studied Vedic culture, Taoism, T'ai chi ch'uan, Qi Gong, indigenous Shamanism, ancient myths and folklore, and nature-based cultures. It was this lifelong interest that led Baugh, together with Martinelli, to develop the Echoes of Earth project. Personal life Baugh was born Linda Sue Baugh in Kansas City, Missouri and grew up in Crystal Lake, Illinois in rural McHenry County. She traces her strong connection to the earth to her childhood there. Currently, Baugh lives in Evanston, IL with her husband, Norm Zuefle. She gives multimedia presentations on the Echoes of Earth project and is at work on a second book about the project.
